How to Contact the DVLA
The DVLA (Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency) handles a wide range of services, from driving licences and vehicle tax to medical fitness to drive and number plates. Because each of these is dealt with by a different team, calling the wrong number can mean a long wait for the wrong department. Below is a simple guide to who to contact for what, along with phone numbers, postal addresses and useful links.
Driving Licence Enquiries
For anything relating to applying for, renewing, or updating a driving licence (such as a change of address or name), this is the team to contact.

A few tips before you call
DVLA phone lines, especially the general enquiries number, can get very busy, particularly first thing on a Monday morning, so calling later in the week or later in the day can mean a shorter wait. Have your driving licence number, National Insurance number, and postcode ready, as you’ll usually be asked for these to verify your identity. For medical enquiries specifically, decisions are assessed individually rather than automatically, so processing can take several weeks; calling won’t usually speed this up unless you’ve been asked to get in touch about a specific letter.
This guide is for general information only. Contact details, phone numbers and opening hours can change, so always check the latest details on the official GOV.UK Contact DVLA page before getting in touch.
